A second cousin comes for dinner!
Charley Carpenter visited us on Weds evening, while on business in Harrisburg with his DC law firm. It was delightful to see him, as Susan and Charlie met only once 30 years ago at his parents (Pat and Bill) home in CA. Charley has done geneaology on the Gibbs and Carpenter families, and made contact with Jenny Odegard interning in DC.

Destination: Turkey in 2008
On Monday, we convened travelers who will set out for Istanbul and the Aegean coast in September 2008. Lynne and Steve Frazier were visiting from NC so we held a SKYPE video call with our travel agent Arzu Tutuk, with Vela Dare. http://www.veladare.com/ These 5 couples traveled to Italy in the fall of 2005 for a "Cook's Tour." John and Julia Griffin in Scottsdale are joining the adventure to Turkey.
Dave captured the call with Arzu. Four couples will go on a week-long Blue Voyage on a Turkish vessel called a gulet - see pictures of Amazon Solo at veladare website. Royers and Hottensteins will rent a villa on an island in the Aegean and relax (seasickness being a factor in choosing land versus sea). Here we have Susan, Pat, Joan and Steve conversing with Arzu.

Wine afficionados Carl and Pat are the "tasters."
Dinner had a middle eastern theme - grape leaves, humus, Turkish spiced chicken, shrimp with feta and tomatoes, and a salad with greens, apples and orange dressing. Dessert was another story...notice the face of Murray the portuguese water dog on the lower left (family member of the Stewarts).
A special order of GULLUOGLU baklava had been delivered. Barry and Meltem introduced us to the best baklava in Turkey when visiting early in the year. http://www.gulluoglubaklava.com/ The baklava was sequestered in the laundry room. Murray pushed the door open and ate 3 pounds of baklava!!! He felt no ill effects from this meal..The perp is below left in black.
Here are the travelers, enjoying a taste of Reccioto that Jim brought as a reminder of Italy, where we visited the winery where it was made.
Look for a reunion of the Turkey trip, featuring baklava late next year!
